Eagles Sweep Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament

The boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams spent the beginning of their Thanksgiving break competing in the Northside Methodist Academy Thanksgiving Basketball tournament in Dothan, AL. Both teams showed up strong and took first place! Each team had to defeat the home team the Knights of Northside to move to the championship game on Tuesday evening.

The girls’ finished their tournament run taking down pesky Bethlehem High School (FL) 44-38. Eagles Ashanti Harrison, Kyla Raven, and Joy Kendrick were selected to the All-Tournament Team with Joy taking the tournament’s MVP award! The girls’ record is 5-2.

The boys faced a physical team from Escambia County (AL) in the nightcap. Though the Eagles led the entire game, the Cougars closed the gap to one point midway through the 3rd quarter, but a critical 3-pointer by Colin Dougherty pushed the lead back to four and the boys went on to win 57-47. Eagles KJ Brown, Caleb Wiley, and Grant Raven received All-Tournament Awards with Grant receiving the MVP award! The boys are sitting at 7-1 on the young season.

Great Turkey Race 2019

A big ‘Thank You’ goes out to the entire Eagle Nation for participating in this year’s Great Turkey Race. With coordination from Student Council sponsors Tiffany Carter and Cheryl Thompson and the middle and high school student council members, students throughout the school helped collect 2772 items of food and $4779 in cash that was taken to the Lord’s Pantry to bless their ministry and those they serve this holiday season!

Congratulations to all the secondary grades for meeting their individual class goals!

I am so pleased to see our school be the hands and feet of Jesus to serve those less fortunate at this time of year. May each of you have a blessed Thanksgiving this year!

Kindergarten’s New Promethean Board

IMG_2872The SCA kindergarten teachers are excited about the addition of the new Promethean board in their department Promethean boards use touch screen technology and are particularly good for this developmental age because as students write letters, match numbers, sort colors, and perform other tasks, they are crossing the midline of the brain and helping make connections between both hemispheres of the brain. Teachers have the ability to display different interactive games and activities allowing students to interact with the board through touch or a special pen.

Our Promethean board is mobile so it can be shared among the kindergarten classrooms. The teachers use educational apps interactively to reinforce letter recognition and sounds, reading one- and two-vowel words, and words with special sounds. The students also review numbers and sequencing, colors, and patterns. With the interactive board, they can practice writing letters and words properly. Our resources are unlimited with this new technology in our classroom.

Technology today is such an intricate part of our daily lives, and our students have taken to our new board like a sponge to water. It has been a very effective asset to our students’ daily learning.

Promethean is a company founded in Georgia that has specifically targeted the lower age levels of students with hardware and software that work in developmentally appropriate ways with younger students. The Promethean board we have lets students interact by touch with fingers creating a natural way for students to interact.

SCA Receives Re-accreditation

tech pic june 2019

Sherwood Christian Academy announced this week that the school received re-accreditation this spring. Since 2007, SCA has been accredited by AdvancEd (the umbrella organization for the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools/SACS) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI).

This dual accreditation speaks of operational and academic excellence as well as the implementation of best practices of Christian education. Being an accredited school puts a stamp of approval and legitimacy on SCA’s diploma, allowing its students to attend the colleges of their choice and to be eligible for a broad range of scholarships nationwide.

Accreditation is a process whereby a school places itself under the inspection of a visiting team of educational professionals representing the two aforementioned accrediting bodies and their prescribed standards. The specifics cover the areas of mission and philosophy; governance and leadership; and operations including security, academics, programming, spiritual formation and strategic planning. SCA passed the standards inspection with exemplary marks.

As a mature school, SCA leadership chose to embark on Accreditation by School Progress (ASP), adding an additional writing component to this accreditation cycle that would have an appreciable effect on student achievement.

“Ultimately, we see effective communication skills as the currency of influence with others and as very important for students’ success in the future job market,” Headmaster Dr. Brian Dougherty said. “We developed a writing project called Writing the SCA Way as a way to increase our instruction in this area across the grades and the disciplines.

“This new curriculum helps every grade K-12 place a strong emphasis on writing and communication skills. The goal is that by the next accreditation cycle in five years, our writing project blueprint is reproduceable by other schools.”
